relaxing weekend

This weekend is sunny but still very cold. Brrrr...
Real feel of below 10˚C throughout the day with or w/o the sun (with low of 6˚C, high of 13˚C).

Saturday afternoon, we went to one of our favourite Japanese restaurant Haiku. It's not crowded at all during lunch. I've blogged many times about this over-priced yummy sushi place which is very popular (esp by angmohs and their Asian girlfriends). Usually, you have to make reservations more than 1 day in advance to get a table.

After that, we walked to a cafe nearby with a bright green door and a bench on the outside. The Cottage at 25a TaoJiang/HengShan Road. If you like something old and nostalgic, this is a nice little "understated" cafe for you to sit down and have a cup of coffee - alone or with friends. I took a walk to the 2nd floor and there's even a very tiny balcony. There were 2 people seated there and i didnt want to invade their privacy. There's a basement too (which i didnt see). Their specialty is Old Mike's Coffee "Lao Mai ka fei" which Elvis ordered. I had the "korean citrus jam drink" - something to soothe my throat. The menu has a lot of scribblings and drawings - i think, intentionally. (Google it, to see more lovely shots of the quirky cafe)

After that, we went to HuaiHai Road Parkson & XinLe Road. Surprisingly, Elvis didnt buy anything despite trying on some stuffs. Haha!

O and there's a huge dog inside one of the shops and Joel kept wanting to touch it and say "dog dog". All of us thought that he might be afraid of it. (But i knew Joel wasnt afraid of big dogs, but this was HUGE!) After all the window-shopping, we decided to dabao dinner home before it gets too cold.

What a simple and relaxing day! ;)

P.S. I called Parkway Health in the morning to fix a follow-up appointment for Joel in the afternoon, but they were fully booked and the doctor was sooo nice to call me back and tell me not to come down instead coz there are many kids in the clinic down with high fever. She said that as long as Joel did not develop a fever, it should be fine. She also said that many of the cases of flu now lasts up to 2-3 weeks. I sure hope Joel recovers faster than that!

Sunday, we went to the Carrefour on the same street as our house (Xietu Road) to get all the ingredients for tonight's dinner. It's our first time there although it's so near. We think it's not as as big/good as the Carrefour at GuBei. After that, we went home to prepare the food. We skipped Joel's Gymboree since he's still not feeling well.

Here's the photos of our hotpot with friends in our house... We wanted to invite Sosuke & HongNgai too (who are staying in the same condo and are our usual Sunday dinner kakis) but we dont have enough chairs!!! Haha! ;p

little precious

I love Joel's expression here. Such a sweet sweet smile! ;)

taking the blame

I just read about Noah's dislocated arm...and my heart went out to him and his mommy. It was a very touching post. I've always thought of Astrid as strong and capable. How could it be possible that such a woman could feel helpless and break down and cry? The reason was becoz she was a mother and it was for her son, Noah - whom i'm sure is still a "baby" in her eyes. It was also a post about whether or not to blame the maid (who had caused it to happen), blame oneself for not being more sensitive...and ultimately about believing and trusting in God.

This time that Joel is sick, i have to admit that part of me also blamed Ahyi for it. At least, she might have caused Joel to fall sick.

When i brought Joel to Gymboree on Sunday, i noticed some kids with flu...and i made sure that Joel didnt stand next to them in class. (Keke...) When we left the place, i also made sure to wipe his hands. Of course, i'm also guilty of giving in to him and letting him drink some Coke that day during lunch.

However, on Monday, i saw Ahyi playing bubbles with Joel on the balcony - out in the cold, probably slightly below 10˚C - wearing just his home clothes of a long-sleeve tee + home vest and home pants. I kinda got a shock! (Note: Joel's home clothes that day was similar to the picture on the right, but with a thinner home pants) She, on the other hand, was wearing the clothes she wore when she walked through my front door (i.e. her winter clothes). When she saw me walk out of the kitchen to the living room (i had been preparing Joel's food), she told me that Joel didnt want to wear his jacket. Immediately, what came to my mind was "Then you shouldnt have let him out!"...but i didnt say anything. I just called Joel to come back in. I also knew that lately, Joel is a little fussy when i put on his jacket for him. So i'm not going to jump at Ahyi and make a fuss out of it. I kept quiet and behaved as if it didnt matter.

That night itself, we took a cab to the dinner place which meant just hop in/out the cab...and Elvis & i noticed Joel had slight runny nose. The next day, it got worse and i had to bring him to the doctor.

Ahyi went with me to the doctor's since it was within her "working hour"...and i also thought that she might be able to help me out in case Joel acts up (like what he did at the Singapore PD's office). As usual, she was "impressed" with all the angmohs with their kids...and thinks it's a "good place". (The hospitals her son goes to only charges S$2-3 for consultation, less than S$10 per visit. That's 1% of what i'm paying!) Part of me also wanted her to know that she should be more careful in future becoz her carelessness caused me almost her month's salary - in medical fees!

I really dont know who to blame for Joel's flu... It could have been my fault... But i really felt like letting Ahyi know that it mattered to me that she made my child stand out in the cold! I really felt like telling her not to do it. Never again!

nursery options

3 days ago, i started to do some research on schooling options for Joel. I got a shock even though i knew that international schools here are very expensive - more expensive than those in Singapore. From nursery/kindergarten level at SAS, it is already more than US$20,000/year (tuition fees here). Even the Singapore International School (SSIS) , the somewhat "local" international schools (YCIS) and the "better" non-international schools (Fortune Kindergarten) are very expensive!!! When i divide by 12 months, it ranges from S$1300-$1800 PER MONTH for international schools, and S$900-$1000/month for the non-international schools. I felt so disappointed... :(
(My friend who works at an International School Singapore says their nursery is cheaper at S$12,000/year)

The following day, i found a 2006 map of our Luwan district and saw a list of Nursery/Kindergarten inside. It was great coz it meant they'll be near our house, and i wouldnt have to spend extra money on school bus or cab fares (4 trips, if i were to fetch Joel to/from school). Hopefully, there was something within walking distance coz Luwan is so big. I called the 15 schools on that list. Some numbers were no longer in use...but it's ok since there's so many anyway.

It was then when i hung up the phone that i realized that schooling in Shanghai is indeed THAT EXPENSIVE!!! Such bad news! These neighbourhood nurseries are charging ¥3800-¥4800/month, approximately S$760-$960/month!!! And the prices goes up at every level - K1 & K2. All prices excludes meals (about ¥10/day) and school bus (about ¥400-600/month). For these schools, an English teacher will come in once/twice a week. Most of the teachers can speak English, but it's not in their job scope to teach that.

I've short-listed a few of the ¥3800 schools within 5-10 minutes walking distance from our house, and we'll go take a look within the next few months. 1 of the school is also offering a half-day nursery at ¥2300/S$460 (which i kinda prefer not becoz of its price)...but the class is full for now.

Ahyi also gave me the telephone number of her niece's school which she said is not bad too...and it's quite near our house. (She said she saw big & nice cars waiting outside the school. Haha!) I called...and it's unbelievably cheap (compared to the rest of the local schools i called)!!! It's like a ray of hope - ¥880/S$180 month for full-day nursery. (If you want to pick up your child earlier, it's also at the same price) We'll take a look at that too.

I hope we can find something that we like and also reasonably good. I'm at a lost what is a reasonable amount to pay for nursery.

achoo... x 3

Last night, Elvis & i could feel the flu bug coming... I took 1 flu tablet before i slept but i still started sneezing this morning. Achhooo~ Joel has been sleeping with us for the past week becoz he was sick and cries a little in the middle of the night. He would sleep better if he slept next to us.

Joel's mucas is still quite thick and yellowish. Problem is...he doesnt like to wipe his nose (perhaps coz its painful?) and he doesnt know how to blow his nose yet. He was given a sea-salt spray and cough mixture which he doesnt like to drink. He's still active in the day and has a good appetite.

We went to the paediatrician at Parkway Health for the first time. (Yes, that's the same one from Singapore) It's housed within RuiJin Hospital which is very near our house. We waited 45-mins past our appointment time before we got to see the doctor. During this time, Joel didnt fuss as he played with the Ikea wooden toys with a little girl who spoke French & Mandarin (不要, 不要).

The overall experience with the paediatrician was reasonably good. She was patient and gentle with Joel. However, the nurses seemed unhelpful and lazy (which is mostly the case in all hospitals here except Suntec-Medical which we used to go to). It was a little cumbersome to have to go to the 3rd floor to collect the medicine and pay at the cashier. (Although this is very common in ALL hospitals to have this step-by-step system.) The only downside was that the bill came up to ¥1338 (a whopping S$270!!!) We're asked to go back again 2 days later - on Saturday - to make sure that his cough/cold did not worsen. I wonder how much extra we would have to pay on the follow-up visit.

P.S. I took a glance at the price list at the cashier... The paediatrician consultation is ¥1128/approx S$230. (Suntec-Medical is ¥300, and the Raffles Medical which we go to in Singapore is S$45.) AND a natural birth delivery cost ¥60,000/approx S$12, 000. It's a right decision not to have any more kids.

funny faces

One of the weekdays, we had dinner at a seafood restaurant near our house. We dont really go there very often...but surprisingly, the waitresses recognize us and even remembers what Elvis ordered previously! It must be becoz of Joel's funny faces.

Lately, Joel kept making this very funny-looking pout when he talks (eg. when he says 'shoe'). I cannot remember what he was "saying"...but when he did this, the waitresses (standing by the side, about 3 meters away from us) all laughed! Their eyes have must been on him all the while!

happy cake

When you receive this cake, you'll feel happy!

I love the simple box, the simple string used to tie it up, the simple labels, the simple stamps, the simple doggie-bag, the simple block candle, the simple square paper plates and the simple cutlery.

Everything is square and simple. From 21cake.

P.S. The cake size is not big at all. The smallest size of 1 pound is probably a 15cm square...can cut about 9 small squares! i think i can finish a quarter of the cake at a go. It's made from rich dark chocolate and a bit of liquor too. Not your usual Black Forest cakes.

happy birthday to mommy

I'm 36 today!

The plan for today is... to bring Joel to see the paediatrician later at 4pm, and Daddy Elvis will dabao my fav (which is also the usual) dinner home. That's it! I've already got flowers last night and a cake will be delivered to our house at 7pm today. (It's an online cake shop i've been wanting to try although it'll be too big for us. So, i'm going to have to give half to Ahyi again and eat the rest for breakfast, lunch, dinner & supper. Haha! Unfortunately, the Green Tea flavour is sold out, so i've settled for Black Forest which is less "heaty" so Joel can get to enjoy it too.)

My Baby Joel has caught a flu...and a cough too. So nothing is more important than to keep him away from the cold temperatures outdoor...and let him get well soon.

The dinner with good food will have to wait. ;)

i'm straight

Yea, i've straighted my hair last week and i went to colour it today.

This is not the first time i coloured my hair black, and not the first time i have bangs. But it's a refreshing look nonetheless. All straight...at least until my "receding hairline" recovers. Every time it gets worse, i'll just have to cut the front and the bald patch will grow back. Phew~

I cant believe i spent a total of about S$400 (after a 50% discount) these 2 days on this simple Cleopatra hairdo!!! $100 (nett price) of which is on Kerastase shampoo & conditioner lah...coz my old Kerastase shampoo is no longer suitable for my hair condition now. The funniest thing is...i even lugged shampoo and styling products all the way from Singapore becoz they cost more here! -.-lll

P.S. If you google 'receding hairline', the first (second & third) picture that comes up is Jude Law!!! Sooooo sad...

the 2 of us

Mommy Jo brought Joel for the 10am Music Class at Gymboree, we shopped a little nearby (to get Joel's baby moisturiser and to check out Daddy's NorthFace "inner jacket" called 内胆 which is still out-of-stock), bought Yamazaki bread for tomorrow's breakfast, walked to Times Square for lunch, and we got home in a cab - alive too - after arguing with the cab driver. Haha!

All these took just a few hours! I wanted to try on some boots since there was a sale (Last Day!), but Joel just didnt allow me to do that. So i also skipped going to buy Joel another winter coat becoz i've carried him almost the whole time we're out - except during his 45mins class. So this will wait till one of the weekdays when i'm out alone. ;)

This is not the first time i brought Joel out alone...but of course, i always have my "worries".

Worry #1 - Joel has a regular Art Class at 4pm, but i think it might be too "late" and/or i'll be too lazy to go out by then.
Worry #2 - There's a 9am Art Class which i dont think we could have made it...plus i hate the mess after each class...and the cleaning up (Joel) afterwards.
Worry #3 - Would Music Class be better? (YES! Becoz neither would i be tired out lifting a heavy toddler up/down in Play Class nor the messy ink in Art Class)
Worry #4 - Joel wants to be carried and Times Square would be a 10-15min walk. (If i'm walking alone, it will be just 5 mins) Cannot bring stroller becoz i cannot manage both...and the cab drivers wont offer help to load/unload.
Last but not least...
Worry #5 - The sky will get dark about 5pm. In fact, the whole day is gloomy coz there's hardly any sun. (In the later winter months, the sun will set even earlier about 4+pm). Yes, i know this sounds very silly but i always try to reach home before sunset - especially when i'm alone becoz it starts to get really cold and you'll feel more alone than you already are.

All in all, today was OK besides walking and having to carry a 12kg baby, juggle the bags, and still perspiring in under 10˚C although i didnt wear a lot. People on the street were staring at us - i guess either at this cute-but-bad kid or poor-thing Mommy!

Carrying Joel is a real workout! -.-lll

at home

Joel & Mommy Jo stayed at home all day today becoz Daddy Elvis had some stuff to do (from early morning till late night, Sat-Mon). I'll try to bring Joel to Gymboree alone tomorrow - if the weather is not too cold. It's freezing already...

Here's Joel's new-found long & skinny legs. Haha! ;)

i'm still getting a connection. keke... ;p

disconnected vpn

I have cancelled the VPN service becoz i found it slow and i'm unable to log-in to MSN while i'm connected. I have been trying to upload some of Joel's photos (unsuccessfully) since last night. (The reason given was that they're upgrading the server to provide better service to us, at the same low price) Being able to upload these text now is like MAGIC! Anyway, i will search for another software...

Meanwhile... Temperatures started to dip again today. Brrrr...

P.S. I've officially cancelled it this evening but i dont know why i'm still able to post this...BUT i'm still unable to upload any of Joel's pictures.

sunglass pout

Joel automatically does this when he put on any shades. Very funny to watch! ;p

MAGIC!
I managed to upload them today! (28 Nov 2009)

23 months

Joel is 23 months and weighs 12kg. He seems to have grown taller all of a sudden - but only at the legs. 1 month short to his 2nd birthday! In preparation for his birthday song-&-cake, he now knows how to BLOW - an action he just learnt from the Three Little Pigs story. He also learnt many news words from his 7-weeks stay in Singapore.

He hasnt started speaking in sentences. Still just words...but he can say 'Three Dittle Pigs'.

Here's one...

we're back

At the T3 Changi Airport with my family. Joel's necessities on-board are a book, biscuits, water and dearest Bear Bear.

Joel was pretty well-behaved on-board. Although we had to share the seat, i managed to have my meal peacefully. (Didnt watch any movie though) We met Daddy Elvis at the Pudong airport and Joel started acting coy! It was pretty funny to see. I also got the porter's help to retrieve my heavy suitcase (while i push Joel - finally seated on his stroller) at just ¥10/S$2 per piece! ;p

Then it was an hour journey home from the airport... The minute Joel walked through the door, he started to play with his toys all the way till we left the house again for dinner! Haha!

Our thai dinner with Pick & Jennie. (Perhaps you've noticed that this is the first time i took a photo of the pretty Jennie)

Joel went home and played with his toys - again!

Joel woke up and played with his toys - again! After that, we went to Crystal Jade dimsum brunch...

...and shopping...

...then to Gymboree Art Class. Joel refused to touch the paint (to make the paper plate apple). There was a costume segment too! Joel was dressed as a pirate! Everyone said very cool~ Keke... JunJun was Ultraman. (It's been a long time since we saw JunJun becoz he's much younger than Joel and just "upgraded" to this class.)

...and more shopping before dinner at a Korean restaurant in GuBei. It's the kind where you sit on the floor and there's a whole spread of small small appetizers.

The only unhappy (or rather, very sad) incident about this weekend is...the waitress spilled an apple cinnamon drink on my new Balenciaga bag!!! The smell still lingers on my bag (cant get rid of it)!!! Sob sob sob sob sob... But maybe i should be thankful it's not some kind of hot and oily soup. :_(

joel's papa

On our flight into Singapore, Joel kept calling Papa, Papa, Papa... So sweet! ;)

unblocked

Freedom! Well, almost...at the price of 36 Euros (approx S$75).

More photos of Joel to come! Yeah! ;)

P.S. Now that we had to pay to get access to the blocked websites, i hope China doesnt unblock them all of a sudden tomorrow! Keke... ;p

Monday, November 23, 2009

we're home

Yeah! We're "home" in Shanghai! I survived the 5-hour flight with Joel & just ONE seat coz the flight was completely full. I was a little worried coz Joel has grown too big for the bassinet...but we managed it and even had our meals and toilet breaks...and even on-board shopping! Haha!

Joel has been playing non-stop with his toys since he came home. I think he misses them...and he knows it's HIS PROPERTY! The house went from super tidy to super messy! That night, we had dinner at the usual Thai restaurant with Pick & Jennie.

On Sunday, we went for the usual dimsum and Joel's usual Gymboree class. Everything was back to normal. Shopping was the usual too, of course. We had dinner at a Korean restaurant with our friends and Joel came home to play with his toys again.

P.S. I'm using a proxy that doesnt allow me to upload photos...till then... ;)

Joel likes to sit on the $2 Daiso rubber ball like this...
